Recovering a Lost Save or a Save Overwritten by Steam Cloud

Your desktop-pet save may occasionally be lost, rolled back, or incorrectly overwritten by Steam Cloud. The August 14 birthday update added a new Save Manager. Players on the current version should use it first; in most cases, there is no need to manually copy files from Saves_BKP.

If the game reports an error or will not open, see the Startup Issues article.

Important: After noticing a save problem, avoid repeatedly starting the game or saving. A newly created empty save may continue overwriting recoverable historical saves.

  • Open the desktop pet's Settings panel.
  • Go to System → Open Save Manager.

Open the Settings panel Open the Save Manager from System settings

The Save Manager lists saves from three sources:

Source Description
Local The save currently used by the game.
Offline Backup Historical backups automatically kept on this computer.
Steam Cloud Saves synchronized through Steam Cloud.

  • Sort the list by Level in descending order. An upward arrow means descending order.
  • The first entry is usually the newest save.
  • Select the save you want, then click Load.

The HashCheck column shows the small-badge verification status; it does not indicate whether a save is recent. If you are recovering the small badge, choose a historical save whose HashCheck status is still valid.

If you previously installed and enabled the official CloudSave MOD, you can also restore a save from its server.

  • Open MOD Management, then select CloudSave.
  • Open MOD Settings.
  • The official server is selected by default in mainland China.
  • Enter the key you previously used, click Save Settings and View, then select the archive to restore.

If the Save Manager cannot open, you can inspect the files manually in the game directory.

  • Current saves: \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\VPet\Saves
  • Offline backups: \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\VPet\Saves_BKP

Normally, use the Save Manager to load these files. Manual copying should only be used when the game cannot start or the Save Manager is unavailable.

If the Save Manager and offline backups do not contain the required save, you can try downloading an earlier save from Steam Remote Storage.

  • In the Steam Store interface, right-click any game cover and select Open link in new tab.
  • Find and download the required save, then place it in the game's Saves folder.
  • Rename the file using the format Save_XXXX.lps; otherwise, the game cannot recognize it.
  • Start the game and use the Save Manager to load the downloaded save.

  • Multiple-account conflict on the same device: Signing in to another Steam account on the same computer and starting the desktop pet can cause local and cloud saves to conflict with and overwrite one another.
  • Steam Cloud synchronization failure across devices: A failed Steam Cloud sync while using multiple devices can cause a save to be lost or rolled back.
  • Prevention: If you often play on multiple devices, consider installing the official CloudSave MOD from the Steam Workshop.

If none of the available saves can be restored:

  • Enable Send diagnostic data in Settings.
  • Prepare your Steam 64-bit ID.
  • Email service@exlb.net and describe when the save problem occurred and which recovery methods you tried.
