Recovering a Lost Save or a Save Overwritten by Steam Cloud
Contents
Your desktop-pet save may occasionally be lost, rolled back, or incorrectly overwritten by Steam Cloud. This article explains two recovery methods. First, try restoring a local backup from Saves_BKP. If the local backups are also missing, try restoring a save from Steam Cloud.
If the game reports an error or will not open, see the Startup Issues article.
Important: Do not start the desktop pet again before attempting recovery. A newly created empty save could overwrite the cloud copy and cause further data loss.
1. Restore from a local backup (Saves_BKP)
The desktop pet automatically keeps historical save backups in the Saves_BKP folder under the game directory. Most cases described as a “lost save” can be recovered this way.
- Open the desktop pet's Settings panel.
- Go to System → Load Save.
- Scroll down through the save list to find backups from
Saves_BKP. If the backup is old, you may need to scroll farther down. - Select a save from before the data was lost, then load it directly.
In Settings, open System → Load Save and scroll down to view backups from Saves_BKP.
2. Restore from Steam Cloud (when local backups are also missing)
If the local backups in Saves_BKP are also missing, you can try downloading an earlier save from Steam Cloud.
- In the Steam Store interface, right-click any game cover and select Open link in new tab.
- Enter and open this address in the address bar:
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=1920960 - Find and download the required save, then place it in the desktop pet's
Savesfolder. - Important: Rename the file using the format
Save_XXXX.lps; otherwise, the game cannot recognize it. - Start the desktop pet. The downloaded cloud save should now appear under Load Save.
Right-click a game cover in the Steam Store → Open link in new tab
Download the save from the Steam Cloud page and rename it to Save_XXXX.lps.
3. Common causes of lost saves
- Multiple-account conflict on the same device: Signing in to another Steam account on the same computer and starting the desktop pet can cause the local and cloud saves to conflict with and overwrite one another.
- Steam Cloud synchronization failure across devices: A failed Steam Cloud sync while using multiple devices can cause a save to be lost or rolled back.
- Prevention: If you often play on multiple devices, download the official Cloud Save MOD for the desktop pet from the Steam Workshop to reduce the risk of synchronization problems.
